And the reason is that three centuries ago the district was deeply engaged in viticulture and wine exportation, but with the advent of other economic cycles and different cultivations, the vines disappeared from the northern landscape until the 21st century. Thanks to the effort of two wine enthusiasts (and they are not alone in Gáldar), the district recovered its vines and now pursues wine production as something very personal and intense in small wineries like the present.

The entrepreneurs of this project are Cristóbal Guerra, a visual artist who, besides teaching and painting, takes care of an ecological vineyard in a crop-growing area where the Franciscan San Antonio de Padua convent used to be; and Rodríguez de Castillo, a dentist who has his office in Gáldar and owns vineyards in a plot right in the very center of the city.

Refurbishing an old stable and a farmhouse that belong to the Rodríguez del Castillo family, they began experimenting with very limited-scale signature wine-making (Viña Amable, El Convento and Nubia), relying on the oenological expertise of Luis Molina. They quickly surprised everyone when two of their red wines appeared in the Guía Peñín for 2012 with 90 and 85 points, for Viña Amable and El Convento respectively, and the white wine, Nubia, with 88 points.
